Goodbye stadtgruen

The netlabel stadtgruen has closed its doors with the end of 2011. Partner radio station frei² says goodbye to stadtgruen by celebrating six hour dj-sets on air. The recording of these sets is now available as podcast (Creative Commons license by-nc-sa).

Why Audacity Rocks

Producing a three hour radioshow using software can be very difficult, especially if the software is complicated and does not like too big files. The program used in the radio (no names here) had problems importing TRV$DJAMs MP3 files (different sampling rates), so I had to resample all 14 files before putting them into one big WAV file. My own DJ-Set laid on the harddisk as another WAV file and the concert recording exists as MP3 file. Together with the introduction the whole folder looked like a so called "sound montage" to me. But as the radioshow has a duration of three hours it results in a WAV file larger than 2 GB. Maybe exporting as MP3 would do it, but instead I tried to copy all tracks into one big file, but the program seems to use WAV internally and would not let me create files with a duration of three hours or so. The work-around had been creating a CD image and compressing it to MP3.

So today I wished to have Audacity on my desktop, because attaching and cutting sound files could be so easy. Audacity has no problems attaching MP3 (or many other types of) files. Although the project folders become very large, the folder structure has no problems with files of several GB in size. And using different tracks it is very easy to mount files to a new set.

So I sat almost two hours in the radio for producing three hours using only complete tracks. In three hours I could have recorded the whole show into the computer. But with copy&paste I estimate the time amount of creating the show as half an hour (or let it be one hour, but much less than two hours).

Net-electronic weekend

Tonight DJ Robb has two new "girls" tracks for your net-electronic weekend. The first one is the latest mix by the famous DJ Ama, Destressor {This is Progressive House}. I didn't know progressive house before, but a great silvester party and this awesome set by DJ Ama introduced very powerful electronic music for me, DJ Robb says. It's very interesting to see the richness of her style. I know her sets from the old time of the YouTube Mixes and I always enjoyed it. For fans there is also a podcast available.

The second one is the video Stay in shape 4 feminism by Viktorias Sekret featuring hard electro by solofski/svenson feat. mommie dearest called do my clit. I found the video/the song via the german blog Mädchenmannschaft – Samstagabendbeat mit Viktorias Sekret (girls team – saturday night with Viktorias Sekret). And, well, it's an interesting kind of feminism. My conclusion: feminism also means women do what they want, so this is much personal freedom. And why shouldn't girls do what they wanna do?

Bash tip: Convert whole playlist

Here is a little Bash tip as english translation of an article by the german partner radio frei²: Converting all audio files within a M3U playlist in a fast and easy way. In the following example we want to decode all FLAC files into WAV for burning an audio CD:

The file PLAYLIST.M3U is in the so-called "simple M3U format". That means, each line of the playlist contains exactly one audio file name.

Is Bevlar really dead?

It has been now nearly four years since the netlabel Bevlar closed down. Starfrosch titled at that time, Bevlar is dead. But is it so simple and clear?

When I had a party some days ago I rediscovered most or (nearly?) all of the Bevlar collection at the Internet Archive. So the music is still there, you can comment and rate the releases. Does death look like that? I don't think so.

But, as the story about former netradio PartyStation showed, there is still a caveat for Bevlar fans: Bevlar decided to put their music under the restrictive by-nc-nd Creative Commens (CC) license. So you are not allowed to mix or remix the tracks for public performance. In this sense you might call Bevlar "dead" for djs, but it was never that alive because of the license.

For me as listener this is OK, and it's still great music. For me as dj I have to respect the license and I could understand the decision, because by-nc-nd is the best way for the producer to control public performance of his work. But for me as dj it's still great music …

DJs impressions of a night on air

Our labels DJ Robb performed last week eight hours at the Frei House Disco Night #5 »Night Tracks« – presented by the radioshow frei². In this blog post he gives some impressions of a night on air:

First of all I want to guide your attention to some rather short, but very nice videos I took while celebrating this night. Although this link is in german, I hope you can figure out the videos and their sources. If in trouble, please do not hesitate asking here. The reactions on this videos and the whole radioshow are incredible. But today I want to show some pictures I took:

: This picture shows the station Freies Radio Kassel just before the Frei House Disco Night starts. The neon tube displays the stations acronym »FRK«. Seconds later I filmed the studio tour mentioned above.

: View from the radiostation, which is located at the Salzmann Factory, to the sundown over Kassels city. The concise towers belong to the Martins Kirche.

: This is the same view, but at dark night (5:20, right before sunrise).

: On my way home after having performed eight hours on air, I had a last eye on the Salzmann Factory.

Our DJ Robb performs two live dates at the students club K19 in Kassel, Germany within the next weeks:

In the night before the May day there is a barbecue party with disco tunes. The BBQ starts at 6 pm, Robb starts at about 8 pm.
On May, 5th there is a concert of the Rock'n'Roll band The Dots from Dresden. Afterwards Robb plays music from his radio show frei².
